Ten Years of yoyofriends

To celebrate the tenth anniversary of yoyofriends, a special anniversary yoyo is being released once again at an accessible price, as a thank-you to the yoyo community. This milestone marks a full decade and calls for a design that clearly stands apart from previous editions

In early 2025, multiple projects were launched as potential candidates for the 10th Anniversary yoyo. One of these concepts was a multi-material yoyo with PC outer rings—a design that is currently popular in the yoyo scene and offers a unique aesthetic. The initial design featured a pronounced V-shaped profile with large PC rings on both the inner and outer sides. Although the idea was well received by the yoyofriends player team, there were concerns about performance and the relatively generic profile. As a result, the design was revisited

Development of the Final Design

For the second design phase, the profile was completely reworked, drawing inspiration from the Shortcut and the Vulture. At the same time, stainless steel rings were added, turning Clockwork into a tri-material yoyo. The PC rings fully encase the SS rings, resulting in a striking appearance and a significant improvement in power and stability

During evaluation by the yoyofriends player team, Tony suggested increasing the weight of the SS rings by more than two grams. This raised the total weight to over 68 grams, aligning with current trends in competitive yoyoing. Due to the large PC outer rims, the mass distribution is shifted slightly inward, making the yoyo feel less heavy than traditional bimetal yoyos with a similar weight. Calculations showed that the combined SS and PC ring weight is nearly equivalent to that of a classic bimetal yoyo. After the discussion, the design was approved for production

Testing Phase and Final Selection

The first prototype arrived just before the 2025 US National Yoyo Contest. The entire American yoyofriends team had the opportunity to test the model and provide feedback. The yoyo was described as smooth, powerful, and enjoyable to play. Despite the higher weight, it maintained excellent speed, thanks in part to the PC outer rings optimising weight distribution. Based on its playability, performance, and striking aesthetics, Clockwork was chosen as the official 10th Anniversary yoyo

The Name: Clockwork

The name Clockwork is inspired by the popular animated series Ben 10, which is familiar to many players and team members. Clockwork is one of the most powerful aliens in the series and possesses the ability to fully manipulate time. This perfectly matches the time theme and the ten-year anniversary of yoyofriends
